‘What is my aim in life?’ How to find your aim in life and why you must have one

Answering the question of “what is my aim in life?” can feel incredibly daunting for many people. Some people seem to be able to instantly answer the question of what their aim in life is, while others find it hard to know their aims and goals in life.

If you are able to answer what your aim in life is without thinking, congratulations, you are in a great place, and you use it to fuel you forwards!

If, however, you struggle to come up with anything after saying “my aim in life is…” then fear not, because this post will help you figure out what your aim in life is.

All about aim in life – Why having an aim in life is important

Before going on, we should address why having an aim in life is important – why it’s important to be able to answer “what’s my aim in life?” for yourself, let alone anyone else.

Without an aim in life, we risk wasting our lives, and wasting our lives is a tragic situation to be in. Think about it – you only get one life to live. You only get one chance to experience everything you want to experience, to do everything you want to do, to be the person you want to be.

If you drift through life without an aim, then you run the risk of getting to the end of your life with regrets about what you could have done and who you could have been. And you don’t want to live with regrets.

Having an aim in life will guide you through any decisions you have to make, whether about a job, relationship, move, or anything else. If you don’t have an aim in life, then the decisions you make will be based on nothing in particular, and you run the risk of drifting from thing to thing rather than moving upwards to a goal in life.

And, here’s the thing – don’t you want to live life to the full? Don’t you want to do everything in life that you can? Don’t you want to take full advantage of this life you’ve been given? Don’t you want to go after your dreams? That’s the real reason you need to know what your aim in life is.

Thinking about my aim in life

I am very fortunate in that I fall in to the category of people who have known since a young age what their aim in life is. My aim in life is to be a film Director. That’s what I want to do.

But just because I have known that for a while, doesn’t mean I haven’t struggled with sticking to that aim or following through with it!

Although it has been a centre in my life for a while, it took some time for me to be comfortable really following through with my objective in life. I was so stuck in fear that I often wondered if I really wanted that as my aim in life. That’s a stupid question to me now, but this is what living in fear can do to you!

But, let me tell you, having that clarity over my aim in life is FAR better than not knowing my aim in life. So I hope that in this post I can help you get some clarity over your aim in life.

How to find your aim in life

Fortunately, figuring out your aim in life is a pretty simple process. It does not have to be that difficult! So don’t worry about it!

Knowing your aim in life comes down to knowing what drives you, what you enjoy, and knowing what you would do if you had nothing holding you back. Basically, it comes down to knowing what you want to do with your life.

Try closing your eyes and imagining exactly who you would want to be if you knew you couldn’t fail. What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

Are there people that you look up to, that inspire you? Have you come across anyone and thought to yourself, “Man, I really want to do what they do”?

Try not to let anything cloud your thoughts. Don’t get caught up thinking about how hard something might be, how you know nothing about it, or how you might fail. You have to go in to this with total faith.

If you are finding this hard, take it back a step further and ask yourself what you are drawn to. What do you like doing? What would someone not have to pay you to do?

Do you want to be at the top of a field or does the idea of having a big family fill you with joy? Do you want to change the world or do you want to make sure your family are happy?

There are no wrong answers here. Follow your gut and explore your mind.

And if you still can’t figure out what draws you in, then you need to get out in the world and experience some things. Maybe you don’t know what your objective in life is yet. That’s okay! But start the process of figuring it out so that you don’t waste your life and don’t waste the precious time you have.

Get out in the world and try new things. See what you like and see where it takes you. If one thing you do sparks an idea for another thing you want to try, go try that! Don’t hold yourself back.

In the end, you will start finding things that make you feel good and you will start figuring out what your aim in life might be.

Write it down as an essay on ‘my aim in life’

I am a big fan of writing down the things in life you realise, the things that help you, and any new thought processes you have. It’s important to write things down because it helps to solidify it in your mind, it helps you to remember the thing you wrote down, and, if you ever forget, you can always come back to it at a later date.

When you have thought about your aim in life, as outlined above, I recommend writing it down in essay form. Grab a piece of paper (hand writing something tends to feel better, and, I find, tends to sink in more) and write “essay about my aim in life” at the top, and then just start writing.

Write down everything you think of. Don’t question what you are writing and don’t feel awkward about writing it either. Just do it, and soon you will have a solid document to lean on when you need it.
